Menopause – just what is going on?

Menopause is a natural process that bookends the reproductive years of a woman’s life. In primitive times, we would be revered as we moved into the realm of Wise Womanhood, the tradition holders, the storytellers, the healers….

hand-on-heart

Just as the process of beginning menstruation as a young teenager was a somewhat erratic time with hormones fluctuating wildly initially, so too as we move through our late 40s or early 50’s, typically, the production of hormones such as estrogen and progesterone decreases leading to the cessation of menstrual periods and fertility.

This is accompanied by a variety of symptoms which can vary greatly from one woman to the next. Symptoms may include mood swings, hot flushes and night sweats, changes in sleep patterns, weight gain, increased joint sensitivity, reduced self-confidence, poor self-image…. While menopause is a normal part of the aging process, the associated symptoms can be challenging for some women.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) has been widely used for many years. In most recent times, research has been conducted to highlight the benefits of some of the more natural approaches with great success and minimal risk factors.

Exercise and a well-balanced diet have been shown to be very beneficial in the management of some symptoms, along with alcohol reduction, non-smoking and reduced stimulant consumption.

Mindfulness, Meditation and Hypnotherapy have also been well documented to have significant improvements to the frequency and severity of symptoms in many women.

With these methods, symptoms are welcomed with acceptance of the natural process taking place. Focusing on allowing rather than fighting brings an unrivalled sense of control when they do arise. With this, a beautiful sense of calm and peace around the transition exists. With the heightened sense of control around the symptoms, you can hold the ability to reduce the intensity of many of these as they present.

Naturally, all decisions around your health management should be made with consultation with your health professional. Please discuss how Mindfulness, Meditation and Hypnotherapy can assist your transition through menopause. By making an informed decision, you will emerge from menopause like a beautiful gracious butterfly breaking free from the constraints of the chrysalis.
